Harun's Home-made potato curry, nan and onion bhajiOne of my life-defining experiences was the time I spent as a 12-year old boy working full time for my dad in his curry house.  My job was to educate our customers about Indian cuisine and to encourage them to buy more. That was thirty-one years ago. Ever since then, the majority of my work has been entrepreneurial with some being great successes, whilst others were great learning experiences.

Having gained huge experience in the entrepreneurial world of selling for a medical devices company, I started my first business. Ever since then, I have been unemployable. Why the heck would I want to get a job? Well, there were a couple of episodes in my entrepreneurial career when I felt it was necessary to get a job. Here’s the thing; I am unemployable and so are thousands of other people who have the common health condition that I have. This condition has several main symptoms – a tendency to be creative , a desire to make a real lasting difference to others and, the clincher, to practice critical thinking. How silly is that?!!

This is a much more serious matter than meets the eye. Humans have only two ways to exist on the planet. They  have to either be in survival or they in creativity. One is based on fear and leads to shrinking inwards and the other is based on lovingness and multi-dimensional growth. I don’t know about you, but I choose the latter. Employers who do not take this very seriously may wonder why they are bleeding away their greatest talents.

A great entrepreneur recently told me that there were less than 1 million SME’s (small and medium sized enterprises) in the UK just over a decade ago. Today, that number has soared to 4.8 million making SME’s 99.9% of all businesses in the private sector and responsible for  59% of the employment in the UK. Despite the so-called recession, there will be approximately 270,000 new business start-ups in the next 12 months.

The facts bear out the truth. Far too many people realise that they cannot live their life purpose and passion, whilst working for an organisation that does not value their gifts and innate abilities. Creativity is restricted through an environment of fear, expectation of mediocrity and conformity. This does not mean people cannot be employed, but it does mean that smart employers may wish to help their employees to discover their true potential and help them to live with purpose. Otherwise, work would be nothing but a job.

If you are feeling that you are no longer employable, then start questioning your own beliefs about how much you are valued at your workplace, what are your real strengths and values, what are the opportunities for you to step up and step out? Perhaps you have a skill or a gift you can share with the world.  Find your passion and live on and with purpose. Being an entrepreneurial spirit, I love my freedom of creativity, expression and manifestation too much to give up my purpose and passion. What’s more, I love nothing more than meeting like-minded free spirits and remaining an entrepreneur allows me to do that.

Love, light and freedom,
